Trip to Scotland and England 2010

Oct 18, Monday

Today was mostly a day of travel with no photos taken. We left Troon in the morning at 6:45 for the 25 mile drive to Glasgow airport -- we got there at 8:10 taking the wrong turn into Irvine instead of around it and waiting at a traffic circle at the edge of Glasgow airport. Christine returned to Dunedin via Heathrow and I took a flight to Gatwick.

From Gatwick I drove around the M25 ringroad to the M1 north, missing the junction because of the confusion of the construction going on there at the moment. Then north to the Milton Keynes area. Milton Keynes is a 'new city' fashioned in part on a grid system with lots of roads -- supposedly somewhat like is done in the U.S. However it is impossible to see what is in the grid sections -- it is difficult to find hotels, restaurants or the place you are heading!

I drove in circles for about a half hour and then headed out to find accomodation at The Bull hotel in Stony Stratford.

Spent a lovely evening with Don and Mary Roskilly and their daughter Jane, son-in-law John and grandson Ross who is now 15 (last saw them in 1999 when Ross was four). Don and I got to discussing a Canadian crew killed in a Halifax crash and he has put me in touch with George Rust of Basingstoke who has researched that crash.
